Notes
* This stage is available as two different stages on the PC version, the first one stops at Shizukuishi and the second one doesn't. All other versions have it as one stage and simply alternate between one or the other when you select it.
** In the N64 and PC versions, this stage is available alongside the other bonus stages here. Furthermore, in the N64 version it'll only appear once you get a gold star on all previous stages.
I can't believe it's winter already. Or maybe it's not. Welcome to the north of Japan, which is completely covered in snow in-game. The main feature here is the Akita Shinkansen, it's classified as a mini-shinkansen (which means it's almost a high-speed train?) service that goes from Akita to Tōkyō. Once it reaches the Morioka station, the E3 series will literally join with another high-speed train to travel the rest of the way there on an actual shinkansen line. It's actually really cool if you think about it.
The Akita Shinkansen goes through rails of two other lines on the way to Morioka, these are the Ōu Main Line and Tazawako Line. The entirety of Tazawako Line is playable in here, it's a one-track line with a few places for trains to stop at if they need to let another train pass by. There's mostly just mountains and trees around to see, but there are few cities and villages on the way as well.
The other line, Ōu Main Line, is actually a huge train line that travels from the very top of Japan's main island (Aomori) down to Fukushima. It goes along the western part of the island for most of the way there. If you need a frame of reference for the entire line, Akita is more to the north than Ōmagari, and Morioka is more-or-less to the east of Ōmagari.
All of these lines are operated by JR East. Wikipedia has much more to say about these train lines as well: Ōu Main Line - Tazawako Line - Akita Shinkansen
There are many devious speed limits here, so watch out. This line is the only one in the game where Power Transition Signs appear at as well.
